Officers (Executive Committee):
WHO ARE WE?
Sustainable
Blacksburg is a non-profit - 501(c)3 - community
organization whose mission it is to
facilitate environmental stewardship in the Blacksburg area and to enhance the
region’s livability by reducing its impact on the local and global
environment. Our current goals are
(1) to initiate and promote sustainable practices in the Blacksburg area, (2)
to encourage other area organizations that promote sustainability, and (3) to
disseminate information to area residents that will enhance our ability to live
in balance with our environment. Currently we have about 250 members
(those who sign up to receive our ListServe). To sign up to receive our
ListServe announcements, send an e-mail message to Bill
Claus.
2012 GOALS
Here are some of our goals for this year:
- Have four evening educational sessions at the library similar to those held last year.
- Develop at least two tours in our area of places exhibiting sustainable practice, such as farms, building projects, and recycling facilities.
- Establish a Booth Team, that would be responsible for erecting the SB Booth at town and campus events, such as Steppin' Out, Earth Day, Gobbler Fest, and during Sustainability Week.
- Continue to announce sustainable activities and events through our ListServe.
- Stimulate greater communication between our members by improving our SB Blog.
- Encourage non-profit contributions that will allow us to sponsor a greater number of local sustainable activities.
- Participate in designing and implementing Sustainability Week, along with the Town of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech.
- Develop at least one Service Project within the Blacksburg area.
MAJOR MEETINGS
General Meetings. These are meetings held during the year where ALL SB MEMBERS are encouraged to attend and vigorously participate. During these meetings, some updating occurs about special events and activities, but the bulk of the hour is devoted to an open discussion among all who attend about anything that relates to sustainability in the Blacksburg area. We HOPE to schedule quarterly General meetings each year, but their frequency depends upon the schedules and energy of our all-volunteer Board.
SB Board-of-Directors Meetings. Held at least once a year, but may be more as needed. These meetings are open to the public for their observation, but the public is not allowed to comment, during these meetings while the Board conducts its business. (After the meetings have ended, however, all sorts of discussions may go on depending upon the wishes of all those who attend.) Elections of Officers are to be held once each year, and, each year, four Board members must be elected. (see Table below)
